VIP event with Pedro Cano, July 3rd 2009

As members of the Danish Sound Technology Network you have the opportunity to meet Assistant Professor Pedro Cano from the innovative Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. He was the founder of BMAT music innovation and among the first to do research in the technological possibilities found in the semantic analysis of music and also in digital search, recommendation and recognition of audio.

The event is for members only and will be conducted in English.

Can computers understand and recommend music?

On Friday, the 3rd of July members of the network are invited to an exclusive VIP event with Pedro Cano from 5.30 to 7.00 pm.

Program:

> Introduction by Jan Larsen, Associate Professor and leader of the network

> Short lecture by Pedro Cano, Music technology applied: the BMAT case, Barcelona Music & Audio Technologies

> Meet and Greet - Mingle with the other participants and chat with Pedro Cano, while you enjoy a refreshment

Pedro Cano in Denmark

Pedro Cano is participating in the conference EMMDS 2009, European Workshop on Challanges in Modern Massive Data Sets, at DTU from July 1st. through 4th. He is giving a speak on Saturday the 4th of  July 1.30-2.30 pm with the title: Music Recommendation Systems: A Complex Networks Perspective.

Abstract:

Nowadays it is possible to access millions of music tracks. In order to ease users to search and discover the music, a number of recommendation systems have been proposed. We analyze the topology of several commercial recommendation systems from a Complex networks perspective. We observe structural properties that provide some hints on searchability and behaviour of music recommendation systems. For example, is the Long Tail truly exploited? How much of the network structure is due to actual musical similarity and how much to other network growth processes?. The properties derived allows us to compare different recommendation approaches: Expert-based, Collaborative filtering and Content-based. Finally, we provide possible optimizations when designing music information systems.
